I just constructed a 2 meter beam from a Radio Shack directional
FM antenna. It sure beats the 5/8 wave mag mount that's stuck to
the apartment building roof hatch!
The microwave antenna you see below it is my BreezeCom
2.4 Ghz network link to Ridgewater
College, where I work doing LAN
and workstation support. More details can be found [here]

Equipment that I have:
Yaesu FT-2200 (2 meter FM mobile, for apartment)
Yaesu FT-8100 (2 meter & 440 FM mobile, for car)
Yaesu FT-10 (2 meter handheld)
Uniden Bearcat 12 band scanner
5/8 wave 2m mag mount for the car (I need a dualband antenna!)
5/8 wave 2m mag mount for apartment roof (stuck to roof hatch)
Home brewed 2 meter beam built from Radio Shack FM antenna
Radio Shack antenna rotator
B&W camera mounted to rotator for storm spotting & antenna
